Further Education

Picture
Our project started to help children get a basic education. After a while we realised we could not stop our support if they had the ability to gain higher qualifications and thus change their lives and any generations that follow.

At present we have 10 students in higher education. The costs are a mere fraction of those in the UK and US but significantly higher than the cost for schooling. Perhaps you are inspired to help us change the future for these students? Just click the link and make a donation which we will put 100% towards their tuition and living costs.

Here are the stories from the young people that have been supported by the Mwantalasha Village Education Project to enter further and higher education:

D's dad died when he was just 6 leaving his mum to care for him and his 3 siblings. In typical African custom she asked her brother-in-law to care for the children. He did well at school and at the end of 2020, despite his studies being affected by COVID19 he was selected to attend a state boarding school for high achievers. He was appointed school prefect in his last year and passed his final exams with 4 Distinctions and 3 Merits. He was then awarded a place at the University of Zambia*, the best one in the country to study Environmental & Natural Resources Management.

J’s dad died when he was 11 and his mum remarried but her new husband didn’t tell her he already had kids and in common with many second marriages in Zambia, he supported his biological children first. Because of cramped conditions at home the charity rented a house for him and other boys to provide space and he repaid our faith in him by passing all his subjects at the end of school including 3 Distinctions and 2 merits. He is now at College studying for a diploma in Agriculture and came in the top 10 students at the end of his first year.

N’s parents divorced when she was 14 and she moved to Mwantalasha to live with her aunt. She was frustrated she was told to wait another year to take her school leaving exams so she just left! Over the next 4 years she studied on her own and achieved 5 ‘O’ Levels which gave her the qualifications to go to University to study Nursing.

L’s mum was widowed within 12 months of giving birth to him. She asked an uncle to care for him and he was able to do this until he was made unemployed. L was doing well academically. The uncle struggling to pay school fees the consequence was L in danger of being excluded from school so his teachers ask the charity to support him. L was selected to attend a state school for high achievers and passed his final exams with 3 Distinctions and 3 Merits. He was then awarded a place at University to take a 3 year diploma course in Clinical Medicine.

M's mum died when he was 8 and he was brought up by his grandfather who struggled to pay for M’s schooling with his pension. He risked being excluded from school for not paying the fees when his teachers asked the charity to help. He was also selected to attend a state school for high achievers and passed his final exams with 6 Distinctions and 1 Merits. He wants a career in aircraft maintenance and when interviewed at Zambia Air Training Institute the principle said he was too bright to be just a technician and he should study Electrical Engineering at University and so have a more senior role.

N’s mum had never been to school but she was determined her son would. With the help of her parents he did so but finances became hard after year 10. He worked exceptionally hard in his final year improving in 6 subjects. He is now studying at university for a degree in Agriculture.

J’s parents divorced when she was just 7 and for the next 10 years her mother raised her on her own. Her mum re-married but her new husband already had children and refused to help J with her schooling. She obtained 5 credits in her final exams and has a place at University to study Business Administration.

F is a very bright student, consistently coming in the top five in every year from Primary until his exams at a state school for high achievers. His final exams were 5 Distinctions and 3 Merits and he was awarded a place at University of Zambia to study for a BSc. in Environmental and Natural Resources Management.

M earned a place at the State boarding school for high achievers but his Civil Servant father had recently been made redundant and so could not afford the costs. He is was also awarded a place at University of Zambia to study for a BSc. in Environmental and Natural Resources Management having achieved 5 Distinctions and 2 Merits in his final exams at school.

C’s parents divorced when he was still an infant. The charity started supporting him in year 8 when family finances became more difficult. He finished his final year with 4 Distinctions and 3 Merits to earn a place at the University of Zambia to study for a B.A. in Economics.

These students will really change their lives, the lives of any children they have and
also given Zambian culture the lives of many family members.
